This week’s maker was kind enough to stop what he was doing so I could ask him a few questions- he had just gotten a new lathe and he let me interrupt him! I found this out when I asked, “What’s your favorite tool!”  Meet Andrew Burnette of Burnette’s Custom Woodworks. A firefighter/paramedic some days of the week and working in a cabinet shop on other days, he still finds time to get in his shop as evidenced by the Cop Caddy he made his father-in-law last Christmas. It has places for all the gear and is made from oak, cherry, hickory, walnut and maple. All the different woods go together perfectly! Not only that, but there are no mechanical fasteners used at all in this piece. It is mortise and tenon with some dowels. The bowl pictured below is made from ambrosia maple and has sentimental value. It was used in his wedding. Along with the sentimental value of the bowl, the top of the dinner table he built was his childhood bedroom door! He designed the table to be able to “grow” as the boys do. Lastly, with the Chiropractor’s sign he made, he was able to reach out in our Southern Woodworker’s community and have help with the laser engraving, and that’s what we as Southern Woodworkers are all about! You can see more of Andrew’s craft at the links at the beginning of this article.
